5 things I wish I knew about antioxidants before 40
Most of what gets sold as “antioxidant support” never reaches the part of the cell it’s meant to protect. Here’s the short version of what changed how we think about it — dose, absorption, source, and the only price that actually matters.
Published by the Lumeva team. We make an astaxanthin softgel, so read this with that in mind — we’ve kept the numbers checkable and the claims narrow.
01
Most antioxidants never make it to your cells
The first thing worth unlearning: swallowing an antioxidant and delivering one are different events. Water-soluble antioxidants — vitamin C is the familiar one — move through the watery parts of the body. That’s useful. It’s also only half the map.
Every cell you own is wrapped in a membrane made of fat. Oxidative stress happens there too, and a water-soluble molecule can’t sit inside a fatty membrane any more than vinegar can dissolve into olive oil. To work in that layer, an antioxidant has to be fat-soluble.
That’s the quiet reason a lot of supplement stacks feel like nothing. Not fraud — geography. The molecule shows up in the wrong neighbourhood, or arrives in a dry capsule with nothing to carry it across. Fat-soluble nutrients absorb meaningfully better when they’re taken with fat, which is why we suspend ours in extra-virgin olive oil and tell people to take it with a meal rather than on an empty stomach.
Ask two questions of anything you take: can it reach the tissue it claims to protect, and is it carried in something that helps it get there?
02
One of the strongest in nature is made by algae under stress
There’s a freshwater microalga called Haematococcus pluvialis. At rest it’s green and unremarkable. Strand it in a shrinking sunlit puddle — intense UV, no nutrients, nowhere to go — and it does something strange: it stops growing and starts manufacturing a deep coral-red pigment, then encases itself inside it.
That pigment is astaxanthin. It’s the alga’s survival coat against oxidative damage from sunlight, and it’s one of the most potent naturally occurring antioxidants studied.* It’s also the reason wild salmon are pink — they eat the algae, store the pigment in their muscle, and swim upstream on it.
Two properties matter for anyone taking it. First, it’s fat-soluble, so it embeds in cell membranes rather than floating past them. Second, it’s unusual in that it spans the membrane — sitting in both the fatty interior and the watery edges at once. That’s the structural argument for why astaxanthin gets studied so heavily as a cellular antioxidant.*
Ours is grown, never synthesised. Synthetic astaxanthin exists — it’s made from petrochemical inputs and used mostly to colour farmed fish. Same name on the label, different molecule profile. Ours is algae-derived and third-party tested batch by batch.
Made by algae. Borrowed by you.
03
The dose on most labels isn’t the range in the research
This is the one that costs people the most money, because the bottle isn’t lying — it’s just quietly under-delivering.
Published human research on astaxanthin has commonly used daily doses in the range of roughly 4mg to 12mg. Plenty of retail products land at the bottom of that range, or below it, because astaxanthin is expensive per milligram and 4mg keeps the shelf price friendly. You’ll see “astaxanthin” on the front and 4mg — sometimes less, inside a blend — on the back.
Nothing wrong with 4mg. It’s just a different amount than what sits at the upper end of the range commonly used in published astaxanthin research. If you’re going to take something daily for months, it’s worth knowing which end of that range you bought.
Lumeva is 12mg in a single softgel — the top of that commonly studied range, in one serving, once a day. Not a proprietary blend, not four capsules to get there.
Free of gluten, dairy, soy and GMOs. No synthetic astaxanthin.
04
Cost-per-day is the only price that matters
Shelf price tells you almost nothing about what a supplement costs you, because bottles aren’t sold in a standard unit of time. Two products at the same price can be four months apart.
The arithmetic is one line: count ÷ servings per day = days of supply. Then divide the price by that number.
| Format | Daily serving | Days of supply |
|---|---|---|
| 120 softgels (Lumeva) | 1 | 120 days |
| 60 capsules | 4 | 15 days |
| 30 capsules | 1 | 30 days |
A 60-count bottle sounds generous until the label says four capsules a day — that’s a fortnight. A 30-count bottle is a month. A 120-count pouch taken once a day is a third of a year. Same shelf, wildly different clocks.
Run it on ours. One pouch is $57.00 for 120 days — about 33¢ a day. Two pouches work out to roughly 28¢ a day and cross the free-shipping threshold; three pouches land near 25¢ a day, which is the cheapest the daily number gets.
Per-day figures rounded. Free shipping applies to orders of $50+ (any 2+ pouch order). We ship to the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia from Pickering, Ontario, within 1–2 business days.
05
Consistency beats intensity
The last one is the least exciting and probably the most important. Antioxidant status isn’t a switch you flip; it’s a level you hold. Fat-soluble nutrients accumulate in tissue gradually, which means the first two weeks of anything like this are mostly uneventful — and most people quit inside a month, right before the part worth showing up for.
Here’s the honest timeline we give our own customers:
Loading. Levels build in tissue. You likely won’t notice anything — expected, not a failure.
First signals. Steadier afternoons and easier recovery after hard days are what consistent users tend to mention first.*
Visible territory. Skin resilience and glow are where daily users report the difference.*
Compounding. Antioxidant support is cumulative. This is a ritual, not a course of treatment.
Which is the whole reason a 4-month pouch exists instead of a 30-day bottle. A month isn’t a fair test of anything that works this way — and re-ordering monthly is exactly how people fall off.
It’s also why the guarantee runs 90 days rather than 30. Take it daily. If, up to 90 days in, you don’t think it earned a place in your routine, email hello@trylumeva.com and we’ll refund the order. No return shipping, no interrogation. That’s the deal — the risk of finding out is ours, not yours.
